That's a wrap!

We finished filming our video, today!
It was very successful even though the weather was quite horrid but we still managed to finish filming. Our actors were excellent, and willing to do everything we asked despite the weather. I'm glad to say that it went extremely well. Myself, Charlotte and Tyler decided to meet Stephanie and Syed at Cutty Sark. Then we started to film our video there. We were done by 4:30.

From filming I learnt more about team work, time management and I've learnt more about myself and the way I work along with people in my group. It was a good experience, and I enjoyed filming. Even though it didn't reach my exceptions. At the beginning of the year, I thought had a vision of what I had expected for the music video, thinking that the music video would be professional as they are on music channels. However, it didn't reach my expectation, but I think that we did really well for our first music video!

And action!

Today, we started filming our music video, "Take it all away". We all decided to meet up at Walthamstow; and start there. We made our schedule locations according to the locations and not the story board. We decided to get the flashbacks done first; first in Walthamstow we went to use the photo booth. Unfortunately we started late, so we were behind according to time. We managed to get that scene done, even though it did take up quite a lot of time. I didn't realise until today, that filming a music video could take a lot of time and decision making.

Charlotte and Tyler (our actors) were great! They really got into their characters. I've learnt a lot about time management and team work today. We also went to the local café in Leyton. We managed to get that part done also. Our camera suddenly needed charging, so we then went to Stratford. While having our lunch break, at Stratford we charged the camera. We then went to the West field's bridge to capture Tyler lip syncing. At times, we found it very frustrating as people were aware of the camera but still decided to walk through the shot which delayed our filming. By 5:15 we all decided that it was time to leave and should meet up next Saturday to finish the video. I thought the video wouldn't take as long as it did. I think we were slightly disorganized and that's why we didn't finish the video in one day as planned.

I'm thankful that Charlotte and Tyler agreed to work with us in creating our music video. It was a great experience but honestly brought me stress too. :') I look forward to next Saturday.

Meeting.

Today, Sayed, Stephanie and myself had a meeting with Charlotte Read and Tyler Dew about filming tomorrow. We gave them the schedule sheet, and recieved the release forms as planned. Sayed explained in full depth the story board and what exactly we want them to do as actors. They seem excited and wanted to carry on with it. I'm very thankful that we were able to find great actors at college; and their currently in a relationship which is a benefit. I'm very excited to see how tomorrow goes, and if we follow the schedule sheet as expected.

Case studies: part 4

Section B
Lenka- We will not grow old.
23 September 2008 through Epic Records

All of Lenka's songs are so simple but at the same time so true. It's like she's able to exactly get at the right point with only a few words.
This song is about how at the beginning of a relationship, especially between teenagers, you are confident that this one will be the person you will spend the rest of your life with, that he/she is "the one". And this happens all the time, you think that you "will never grow old" and that you’re two "hearts will never die".
But then, at the end, she realizes that this feeling and this adolescent love will eventually end, and fade away.

The music starts as loads of pictures put together, at a fast speed. It appears that the camera is hand held, and shows her journey as she walks up the stairs.

The camera begins to zoom in for about two seconds and then zooms out. To show us her movement, as she walks up the stairs. From 0:04 to 0:06.

The camera gradually gets closer to the actress who is sitting on the stairs. Because it's hand held, it allows us to feel apart of the video. We're moving with the camera, we become the footsteps.

There's a close up of the hands of the actress.Only until we get closer, we see she has a notebook in her hand but appears to be blank.

The page then starts to blossom with colour cut outs of paper, creating beautiful patterns. She used different materials, and they move and burst with energy.

The energy of the animation describes her love and how she's feeling. It's colourful and shows her joy and how she feels about their relationship. I believe the cut outs and materials symbolizes their relationship, lively and never ending. It's quite unusual to music videos nowadays, however it's mysterious and quite romantic.

0:51 - 0:56. The camera goes up to Lenka and she blows up the balloon. Then it rewinds. The camera moves backwards while the balloon deflates. I want to use this technique in my own music video because I believe it would be very effective, and make a video interesting.

A few times the lyrics appear on the balloon and the there's many scenes where she writes the lyrics on the floor. I like the idea of the lyrics visually on the screen. There are also quite a few close up shots, to show us closely what Lenka (woman in video) is doing.

This video is very creative and conceptual. She's young, in love, and believes that their love will last forever.

I think the target audience, is anyone who loves animation, and stop motion. People who also love love songs (ages 15-onwards). It's a stop motion video; I find it quite entertaining and creative. In my music video, I think that I would like a bit of stop motion. I like the shot above where Lenka writes the lyrics on the floor. I think the stop motion idea is really sweet, simple and very effective.

Case Studies part 2.

Hellogoodbye- When we first met.
LAB records on the 14th March 2011.

I definitely think this song is a metaphor about the emotional baggage that develops throughout a relationship.
"When we first met Your hair was long and brown You hadn't yet cut it all off"
Here he's talking about baggage from a past relationship the girl had before they met, then they got into a relationship and it's long once again. He then goes on to talk about haircuts, which could probably talking about problems within the relationship which kind of lifts the burden of them
Then throughout the song he talks about seeing the girls hair grow long as the days grew on, which is just all the problems and such that goes on throughout a relationship. For this song, I think the target audience is young people upwards. It’s about love and it really for anyone who can relate. Also, it’s for people who are into indie rock. It’s a happy, cute song which I'm sure some people can relate to.

Over the shoulder shot. This shows the male actor cutting bits of his hair and putting it into the sink. Almost like cutting out burdens in their relationship.

This is the couple, as they puts the ring on this girlfriends's finger. This is a wide shot, to show us everyone in the frame from a wider angle.

There is lip synching used at this bit of the video. He’s walking with his girlfriend but also singing the song. It also gives the video more of a happy vibe when the artist is singing the song in the video.

At this scene on the music video (1:08-youtube) the camera pans to the male actor then to the female actor a few times. Each time we see her, her hair is different.

Wide shot again to show us the surroundings of where the actors are. I would like a shot like this for my video. It’s quite beautiful.

This video is very fun, the singers, the band, everyone involved is having fun. It gives the video more energy and positive vibes.
I want everyone in my music video to enjoy them, even if the video is sad.

Case Studies part 1.

Media studies A2 Preparatory Task

Media studies A2 Preparatory Task
Brief A: Music promo task.
You could be happy -Snow Patrol (Northern Irish/Scottish alternative rock band)
Coldplay (British rock band)
Good enough – Lifehouse ( American Rock band from Los Angeles)
All three tracks have been released but don't have a music video. These songs above are the 3 potential music tracks I could use to produce a promo video.

I think the song, 'You could be happy' by Snow Patrol is about regret for letting go of someone special, and having to come to grips with the fact that he lost his chance. But, is now if left with nothing except to see her move on and doing well. I don’t think it has anything to do with his “true love” not loving him back. He makes it clear that this girl wanted him, but he didn't want her and pushed her away.
If I was to use this song for my music video, I would want to portray what I think the song is about into a story for the video. I would have scenes where he could be walking on the street by himself, or perhaps in his house. Flashbacks in the video, would appear to show the audience past events of what happened between the male and female actor. For example: The couple arguing, the couple sitting and laughing together, sleeping. These will link to the lyrics, “But you weren't happy the day I watched you go"- The female actor can walk out the door leaving the male actor standing there. "And all the things that I wished I had, not said". There can be a flashback of the actors arguing, and throwing things around the room. "Is it too late to remind you, how we were?" there can also be another flashback, or even if it's a hallucination were he can see them in front of him and then they can disappear. They can be laughing, and enjoying each others company.
For this song I think only 2 actors are needed. I'll ask people from LSC and other friends in different colleges if they wouldn't mind acting for the video. I would like some shots/scenes to be taken on the street and perhaps in a house. The flash backs, can be taken in different places such as the park, to show the audience how they used to be as a couple. What they used to do together and how they used to feel about one another. I would like the male actor to lip sync, in this video. I think it'll go quite well, to the song as it's slow with a steady pace.
Flowers: I would like the male actor to give the female actor flowers, for a flash back as she sits at the table. He could be reminiscing and as he sits there remembering her and that day, there's a flash back which shows the couple sitting at the table with the flowers he had given her. 2) Tea mugs: They can sit together in the house drinking tea, or they could be out in a cafe having coffee.

U.F.O- Coldplay.
I feel this song ‘ U.F.O' by Coldplay has to do with a point in someone's life where they're just stuck, and really struggling to understand that point in their life. Wanting to achieve something, or maybe get somewhere that feels unattainable and it's just hard. It's just difficult, and you can hear the crying out to whether it's God, love, or some kind of positive force, that the character knows he'll find hope. That eventually, he'll get there, and it'll be alright. That's what I take from it anyway. I think this song is beautiful, one of my favourites, I think the length also is perfect for a music video.
If I was to use this song for my music video, I would want to portray as a journey. I would have the male actor walking towards the camera as the camera moves back to show the actors surroundings, their body language and mise-en-scene. I can imagine the actor walking on the street, as everyone else surrounding him is frozen. This is a metaphor as to how their life is. Their stuck, confused, in need of getting them back on track. Also, this video can be shot in the forest. I can get shots of the trees above, and how lonely they feel in the forest as they walk on. The forest (hollow ponds) I don’t feel that this song requires a lot of actors and different props. I believe that it can be kept quite simple and still have an impact. “Lord I don't know which way I am going”. He could be sitting down on a bench, confused. Still got such a long way to go”. He could be walking a long path, to show that he’s still got a long way to go.
I believe that this video would be extremely different to the videos played on television nowadays: this song is just about 2 minutes and the lyrics are quick compared to the songs that are played on TV. I would like the male actor to lip sync; I think it would also work very nicely, as it’s again slow, and a steady pace.
Good enough - Lifehouse

I guess in life, you can never please everyone and it’s a horrible feeling for those people who can never make their parents and loved ones proud enough. The singer is making a statement, being able to speak to those who have never been proud enough. Making a statement to say “this is who I am and that’s all I can be”. It’s a song I think a lot of people can relate to and understand at some point. How it’ll link to the lyrics:  I want the story to be about wanting to make loved ones proud. It’s quite a sad song, so I want the video to be quite sad. Perhaps to portray different families and how a member of the family wants to make the proud for example: not getting good grades in school, changed personality/sexuality, doing something that makes them happy but family don’t approve.
For this song, I would like quite a few actors in this to portray different families and different situations. This will be diverse, and to show that it happens to a lot of people and different people can relate. Everyone in the video has a story to tell, for example there could be three characters.
A character for example: Her situation could be that she’s not getting the grades her parents want her to get. They expect her to do the thing, she doesn't want to do. She’s angry, uncomfortable because she’s not what her to be? There would be close up’s of her face, showing her facial expressions. (to show that she’s upset). There can be a special effect, when it everything goes in slow motion, to show she’s really alone. It would match the video because the song is a slow paced song. Some scenes could be taken at different homes, at schools (classrooms) Maybe props can use such as computer, phones, bag, letters ( writing a letter to their loved one) Locations can be a mixture of places such as the park, different homes, on the street. This video would be different, because I feel it holds quite a lot of meaning and is very diverse. I can imagine all the characters singing a chorus together. I do like this idea, however I do think that I would also be quite difficult to film and get prepared because it’s not planned out as much as the other two.

Case study part 3.

The Script- Breakeven

It's about how when two people break up, one person is always left hurting more than the other. Thus, the heart doesn't break even. It's easy to see that he's the one left hurting the worst. This song is so true and simply amazing. I love the double meaning “break even”; the fact that his heart was left in a smaller piece. In other words, her heart is still whole and his is broken.

The video is mostly in black and white, and I would consider taking this feature. I think it adds atmosphere and emotion to the video. Usually in music videos, the flashbacks are in black and white. This video contrasts with them; the flashbacks are in colour while the reality is in black and white; which shows us that his life is dull without her.

I think this effect is so simple but very effective. We can see his hands, are black and white but the image of his "ex girlfriend" is in colour. It's a close up shot, to show us what the male actor is looking at. Also, the colour adds atmosphere and story to the video. She brought colour to his world of black and white and now his life is dull without her.

Bird's eye view, allowing us to see from above. The couple, cuddling together. I would like to have a similar composition in my own music video. It's a nice shot, and allows us to see clearly what's happening.

Here's another close up, showing the main singer "Danny" singing. You can see the sweat on his forehead; he's singing his heart out. Singing how he feels; I would like to have a similar shot. With a close up, you can see facial expressions, and gestures. Telling us without words, how their feeling.

From 1:15 to 1:17 on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzCLLHscMOw
The camera seems to be hand held and tilts up the musician in this shot. The hand held camera technique allows us to feel like we're apart of the video and to feel apart of their music. We're involved and move with them. The tilt movement on the camera made it feel like we were looking up at the musician. It also creates an interesting point of view, because instead of being eye to eye with them, we're shorter or below him.

Here's a wide shot, showing us the male singer walking towards his window and the boxes in the background. The boxes are props, and from my assumption it signifies her no longer in his life. Memories, precious things have been boxed up. This shot allows us to see the actor and the background, allowing us to put things together to what's happening.

At 1:35 the camera zooms in till 1:37 to make us concentrate directly on the couple as they come out the house. It's only we get closer we discover that's she's leaving him. The bag in her hand, signifies that she's leaving.

From 1:49 to 1:50 the camera starts from a wide angle shot and tilts once the door is closed. It tilts being hand held. I believe this was done to signify his life once she left him. As he closes the door, the camera tilts uncontrollably as a metaphor as how he feels/feeling/his life now.

I love this shot of the couple with their heads together. I plan to do a music video about love, and this shot would be perfect to do also. It's slightly from below, allowing us to see both of their expressions.

At 2:17, a clip is in slow motion. The female actor, is bright and radiant almost like an angel. Her hair blows slowly in the wind, and she slowly turns to face the camera.

Wide angle shot, showing the singer walking away. It's quite sad, as he walks along this long path, perhaps showing everyone he'll get over her but it'll take time. It's a beautiful shot, and this video was well shot.

Recce.

Stephanie, Sayed and myself went to see locations for our music video yesterday. We went from Greenwich, Westminister, Canary Wharf, Cutty Sark, Walthamstow, Namco and Island gardens park. We went around to different places according to the storyboard.

For the beginning of the music video, we intend to have a tilt shot. Having the camera start from a low angle shot with the trees and surroundings as the subject. It's going to tilt slowly down from the sky, to the trees and then to Tyler.

Tyler then appears to be sitting in a park on a bench. He looks at this watch, showing the audience he's waiting.
Tyler will get a text message "it's over" and get up and start walking. He'll start to walk down a path and lip sync the words. We plan to have a tracking shot, when the camera will  walk with the actor as he walks down the path. "Tracking".

He gets up, and starts walking on his own. He walks down the path still lip-syncing the words showing his stressed, and upset about their breakup. He'll sit aganist a wall, and then we'll insert  We'll have a close up of his face, to show his facial expressions and then the chorus will start with the flashback.

The flashback includes the couple playing around on the grass. There will be a mixture of close ups, birds eye view, medium shots, and so on. The first flashback is of the couple playing around, in a park. Chasing each other, laughing and teasing each other. We then planned a short reverse shot in a local cafe. We intend to have the couple sitting with each other as the flashback.

We came across both these cafés, that we could use for one of the flashbacks.- Greenwich. We have decided to use the cafe in Bakers Arms. It's near college, and easy to get there.

This is where Tyler is going to be standing on his own. Looking at the view of London ahead of him. We want to get a shot where he's standing at the edge looking at a scenery of London. Looking and also feeling lonely.

Cutty Sack; the couple will walk along here during a flashback. We thought it'd be a nice location to have a flashback.

Near Canary Wharf, the bridge is where Tyler will be for the last scene. He'll start to burn the image, with a lighter of himself and Charlotte. He'll then walk away from the photo. Leaving it to burn to show, he'll get over her.

The place where Charlotte and Tyler first meet. We have a flash back after the time rewinds.

I really enjoyed seeing our locations for where the music video can be filmed. It's brought many ideas to our minds and also we had a good day out at looking around.

Lyrics along with story.

The whole story of our video:

It starts with the sky, we're going to pan the camera from the sky, to the trees, and then to Tyler. Who appears to be sitting in a park on a bench. He looks at his watch, showing the audience he's waiting for someone. We then show Charlotte (his girlfriend) texting Tyler "I can't do this anymore, it's over".

 ñ
( "There was a shot in the dark,
I was caught by surprise
There was a hole in my heart,

There were tears in your eyes
And there was nothing to say,
Cause you made up your mind
And so I guess what you meant
When you left was goodbye". )

He gets up, and starts walking on his own. He walks down the path still lip-syncing the words showing his stressed, and upset about their breakup. He sits aganist a wall, and then we insert flashbacks.

ñ
And leave me in a lonely gray
I won't let it show,

Until you finally float away". )

The first flashback is of the couple playing around, in a park. Chasing each other, laughing and teasing each other. We then planned a short reverse shot in a local cafe. We intend to have the couple sitting with each other as the flashback. The camera is going to go from Tyler, (smiling and happy) to Charlotte (also happy, and in love) and then moves back to Tyler. When it moves back to Tyler it will no longer be a flashback and now turns back to reality. The camera will cut back to an empty chair to show she's no longer in his life.
ñ
("You gotta know that you tear me up
When you say you wanna take it all away, take it all away
You tear it up when you say
You wanna take it all away, take it all away!
You were the one, and it was enough
To be the one you were dreaming of!
You were the one and we called it love
And now you take it away, take away")

We also plan to still show him distressed, and almost confused and angry as why this has happened. He can't digest what happened, and is struggling. He'll lip sync through this whole verse. We're also thinking about having a time lapse through this verse to represent his life at present. Without her, his life has sort of stopped. But the world and time is still passing.

ñ
"I felt a pain in my chest with your kiss on my cheek
And as I tried to digest the words I couldn't believe
I'm left with nothing to say with my heart on my sleeve

Making it easy to hurt, and even harder to breathe."

"So if you gonna go,
And leave me in the lonely gray
I won't let it show,
Until you finally float away"

Another flashback inserted here. We have the couple at an arcade. they'll play games and enjoy each other's company. They'll also go to a photo booth and take photographs. We'll take a close up shot of the photos as they as printed. They'll be pulling funny faces, and they'll be happy. He'll start to lip sync in Greenwich. We want to get a shot where he's standing at the edge looking at a scenery of London. Looking and also feeling lonely.

ñ
"You tear me up when you say

You wanna take it away, take it all away!
You were the one, and it was enough
To be the one you were dreaming of!
You were the one and we called it love
And now you take it away, take away!
You take it all away, you take it all away"

In the song, at 2:25 there's a sound that reminds us of water, it's a blurred out sound. We decided to record the clock and rewind to then show the past. The music fits very well with this scene.

It'll then rewind back to another flashback, to the first time Charlotte and Tyler met. They'll be walking down a path also in Greenwich and Charlotte will drop something. Tyler and Charlotte both go to fench it and end up touching each other's hands. They instantly smile and fall in love. The last scene, It'll go back to reality and Tyler will be sitting again on his own. He'll have the photo they took at the photo booth. Then he'll start to burn the image, with a lighter. He'll then walk away from the photo. Leaving it to burn to show, he'll get over her.

ñ"You gotta know that you tear me up
When you say you wanna take it away, take it away
You tear me up when you say

You wanna take it away, take it all away!
You were the one, and it was enough
To be the one you were dreaming of!
You were the one and we called it love
And now you take it away, take away!
You take it all away, you take it all away"

Analyzing the lyrics has helped with ideas with what happening inside the frame with camera shots, etc. I always really enjoyed planning out how the music video will be and definitely look forward to filming the final piece!
